When I was a newbie, I would have needed someone to say, “See those little triangles under the black and white mountains (the histogram) in the Levels window? Click on the black one and slide it to the right.
Details like their location in the screenie would have escaped me in the beginning.
I was a TOTAL NOOB!
Anyway, nice tip. I just recommended this page to a newbie looking for help on the irc channel I inhabit.

you can see the exact values in the screenshot. usually they vary from image to image, so it’s not important to know the exact values, but the steps needed to achieve each effect.

Instructions like “punch up the blacks” is not specific enough when trying to teach newbies. Please be more concrete in each section. Thank you for the lesson.
